Mind-Body Medicine and Autism

Mind-body medicine (also known as mind-body practices or mind-body interventions)focusses on the interactions among the brain, mind, body, and behaviour. The idea behind mind-body medicine is that the mind and the body can be used to affect physical functioning and to promote health.

Mind-body medical practices include:

  • meditation-based activities such as deep-breathing exercises, guided imagery, hypnotherapy and progressive relaxation and yoga (activities which are also sometimes used within mindfulness training)
  • Tradtional Chinese medicine/martial arts-based activities such as acupuncture, nei yang gong, qi gong, tai chi
  • other practices including the Feldenkrais method, the Alexander technique, pilates, Rolfing Structural Integration, and Trager psychophysical integration.
