Cysteine is an amino acid that can be found in many proteins throughout the body.
It is sometimes taken as a nutritional supplement to boost the metabolic system or used as a chelating agent to remove heavy metals from the body.
It is also known as acetylcysteine, cystein, cystin, L-cysteine, N-acetyl-L-cysteine and NAC.
Please note that some forms of cysteine can produce significant and hazardous side effects in some individuals. For example some forms of cysteine are toxic and should be avoided. Other forms may play a role in the development of heart disease or may cause severe allergic reactions including anaphylaxis.
