Memantine is in a class of medications called NMDA receptor antagonists and is sold under a variety of brand names inc. Ebixa, Maruxa, Nemdatine and Namenda.
Memantine works by blocking the amount of glutamate the brain. Too much glutamate can damage nerve cells responsible for learning and memory.
Memantine is currently used to treat people with Alzheimer's disease but some researchers believe it can also be used to help some people on the autism spectrum.
