Introduction
Hippotherapy is the use of horses as a therapeutic tool to help people with special needs.
It differs from horse riding for pleasure in that the therapist manipulates various aspects of the horse’s movement, position, management style, equipment and types of activities in order to achieve therapeutic objectives.
These objectives may include improvements in posture, motor planning, coordination and timing, grading of responses, respiratory control, sensory integration, and attention.
Opinion
We are currently reviewing the literature on the use of hippotherapy for people with autism.
