Introduction

Food supplement capsules Some people believe that that a form of yeast called candida albicans may cause autism. It may also exacerbate some behaviour and health problems in people with autism.

They believe that anti-fungal medications or food supplements can help resolve some of these problems.

This intervention is sometimes combined with a yeast-free diet.

Opinion

There is no scientifically valid or reliable evidence that anti-fungal treatments are effective in the treatment of autism spectrum disorders.

There are potential hazards in using some anti-fungal treatments.

For these reasons we do not believe that anti-fungal treatments are an appropriate treatment for autism spectrum disorders.

However, because anti-fungal treatments are so commonly used by people with autism spectrum disorders, we believe that it may be worthwhile conducting scientifically valid and reliable research into this treatment.
