This glossary is designed to explain some of the jargon and gobbledygook used by some people when they talk about autism or research.

Glossary Item: Description
G Therapy: Another term for Homeo-Biochemic Formulation Therapy, a homeopathic remedy based on plant oils which are highly diluted and then added to biochemical salts.
GABA: Acronym for gamma aminobutyric acid, an amino acid which acts as an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system
Gamma Aminobutyric Acid: Amino acid which acts as an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system
Gamma Linolenic Acid: Omega-6 fatty acid found in some plants, such as Borage and Evening Primrose
Garlic: Herb which is sometimes used as an anti-fungal treatment.
GARS: Acronym for Gilliam Autism Rating Scale, meaure designed to identify and diagnose autism in individuals and to estimate the severity of the problem.
Gastro-Intestinal: The stomach and other parts of the digestive system. Many people with autism spectrum disorders are reported to have significant GI problems.
Gemmotherapy: A type of drainage therapy, a treatment which uses the buds and other very young parts of plants to stimulate elimination of toxic compounds from the body.
Genotype: The particular set of genes possessed by an organism, or group of people with a disorder, which interacts with environmental factors to determine the organism’s, or group of people’s, phenotype.
Gentle Containment: Another term for holding therapy, an intervention which consists of forced holding by a therapist or parent until the child stops resisting or until a fixed time period has elapsed
Gentle Teaching: Non-violent approach for helping people with special needs and sometimes challenging behaviors.
Geodon®: Brand name for ziprasidone, a type of anti-psychotic drug sometimes used to treat problem behaviours in people with autism spectrum disorders.
GF diet: Acronym for Gluten-Free diet, a diet which avoids or reduces foods which contain gluten, a substance found in cereals
GI: Acronym for Glycemic Index.
Giant Steps: School-based programme which offers a range of therapies
Gilliam Autism Rating Scale: Meaure designed to identify and diagnose autism in individuals and to estimate the severity of the problem.
Ginkgo Biloba: A herb extract used to treat circulatory disorders and enhance memory.
GLA: Acronym for Gamma Linolenic Acid, an omega-6 fatty acid found in some plants, such as Borage and Evening Primrose
Glandular Therapy: Another term for cell therapy, which include various procedures in which processed tissue from animal embryos, foetuses or organs, is injected or taken orally
Glutathione: Antioxidant which is supposed to protect cells from toxins such as free radicals
