The Support and Skills Program (SSP) is an intervention for children on the autism spectrum and their siblings.
It is designed to decrease typical sibling maladjustment, increase sibling's knowledge of autism, increase sibling social network, and improve sibling-child with autism interactions.
During each meeting, children on the autism spectrum receive individualised intervention in social, communication, and play and leisure skills. Simultaneously, their non-autistic siblings meet to participate in a support group focused on developing a network of peers who face similar family challenges, learning about autism, and learning coping strategies.
Then children with ASD and their siblings attended an inclusive recreation time where they practice what they have learned in their separate groups.
The intervention was developed by staff at Queens College of the City University of New York, USA.
