Early Intensive Behavioural Interventions

Early intensive behavioural interventions (EIBIs) are multi-component packages which use a wide range of behavioural techniques and which are aimed at preschool children on the autism spectrum. 

EIBIs are sometimes referred to as 'ABA' because they are based on the principles of applied behaviour analysis.

Specific EIBIs include

  • Douglas Developmental Disabilities Center Program (also known as the Rutger's Program). A form of Early Intensive Behavioural Intervention, delivered by the Douglas Developmental Disabilities Center at Rutgers University, New Jersey.
  • May Institute Program. A form of early intensive behavioural intervention for autism run by the May Institute in Rochester, Massachusetts.
  • Murdoch Early Intervention Program. 
  • Nova Scotia Early Intensive Behavior Intervention Model. A model used in Nova Scotia, Candada and based on a behavioural intervention called pivotal response training.
  • Ontario Preschool Autism Initiative
  • Princeton Child Development Institute Program. A model developed by the Princeton Child Development Institute in New Jersey.
  • University of California at Los Angeles Young Autism Project model (also known as the Lovaas method or the UCLA YAP model). The original and possibly best known form of EIBI.
