Research

This page provides an overview of the scientific studies into the effectiveness of this intervention, including details of any clinical trials, which have been published in English-language, peer-reviewed journals.

We have identified more than twenty scientific trials of PECS published in peer-reviewed journals.

These trials included a total of more than 250 individuals aged from 21 months to adult.

  • 16 studies (Angermeier K. et al, 2008;. Bondy and Frost, 1994; Carr and Felce, 2006; Chambers and Rehfeldt, 2003; Charlop-Christy et al, 2002; Frea, Arnold and Vittimberga, 2001; Ganz and Simpson, 2004; Heneker and Page, 2003; Kravits et al. 2002; Liddle, 2001; Magiati and Howlin, 2003; Marckel, Neef, and Ferreri, 2006; Rehfeldt and Root, 2005; Schwartz, Garfinkle, and Bauer, 1998; Tincani, 2004; Yoder. and Stone, 2006).reported significant improvements in communication.
  • 4 studies (Berkowitz, 1990; Jones, 2004; Son et a., 2006; Tincani, Crozier, and Alazetta, 2006). reported mixed results.
  • We have been unable, as yet, to identify the outcomes from 4 studies (Adkins and Axelrod, 2002; Buckley and Newchok, 2005; Carr and Felce, 2006; Webb, 2000).

( We have yet to evaluate or include the following studies in our ranking for this intervention but all reported positive benefits and therefore do not affect the ranking for this intervention.)
