My daughter needs better autism role models
Scandinavian thriller The Bridge is back on television again, and it’s making me tense. The source of my twitchiness is not its tight plotting and taut scenes, however.
It is the national conversation about protagonist Saga Noren that accompanies every new season of the programme.
Saga is the heroine and Saga has autism. She is rude, abrupt and dismissive, because as everyone knows, having autism means you lack social skills. She doesn’t understand jokes – for the same reason – and she can’t build relationships – again, because having autism means that you trample all over other people in your inability to get along together.
Saga is What A Woman With Autism Looks Like.
Only she’s not.
