Things not to try for autism

When a child has communication challenges related to an autism spectrum disorder, parents and educators will often try a variety of remedies — many of which lack scientific evidence.

Often, the interventions or “therapies” may actually do more harm than good.

It is only natural for a loving parent to want to exhaust all possible solutions to help their child, however, this places the family in a vulnerable position.

The desire of a parent to understand an autistic child’s thoughts, needs, and wants make the autism community especially vulnerable to interventions and “therapies” that have been thoroughly discredited, says Scott Lilienfeld, a psychologist at Emory University.
