Our chairman, Geoffrey Maddrell, completed a hot and hilly Helsinki Marathon on Saturday 19 August to raise just under £24,000 for Research Autism. Originally entered for the Edinburgh marathon in June, a bout of shingles forced Geoffrey to pull out with a week to go. He immediately made plans to enter Helsinki and had to repeat most of the gruelling training including two 20 mile training runs. Geoffrey said: “ Notwithstanding my gruelling experience in the Helsinki marathon, I would strongly recommend the joys, challenges and benefits derived from training for and running a marathon, especially for such a wonderful cause. In my case I should probably have heeded advice and not started running so soon after a bout of shingles!”
Research Autism’s Director of Research, Richard Mills said, “This is a magnificent effort. Geoffrey is a real inspiration to us all. To complete such an event in adverse conditions and whilst still unwell is remarkable.
