As the UK acknowledges World Autism Awareness Day (WAAD), Research Autism highlights the urgent need for more ethical research into autism interventions. The charity is also calling for clear recognition of autism as a distinct condition, which is separate from any learning disability or mental illness.
Research Autism takes pride in working closely with the autism community and where possible involves individuals on the autistic spectrum in their work. They have been supporting ethical research into autism interventions since their inception in 2003.
Research Autism aims to provide the trusted voice on interventions into autism through:
Geoffrey Maddrell, Chairman of Research Autism says:
“Research Autism is the only UK charity that is solely focused on improving the quality of life of those on the autistic spectrum through the origination and funding of research into interventional treatments and therapies. Our website www.researchautism.net holds a wealth of impartial information, which is referred to by families, those on the spectrum and health professionals across the UK and the rest of the world.
There are a large number of so-called treatments, many of which have not been scientifically researched and may be expensive, ineffective and potentially harmful. We want to provide families of children and adults on the spectrum with independent evaluations of interventions based on the science, not on anecdotes.
The annual cost of autism in the UK is just under £28 billion (1) and it is for this reason we feel it imperative to commission further ethical research where we believe we can make a real difference to improving the quality of life for the 500,000 or so people affected by autism in the UK.”
