Research Autism patron, Baroness Prashar leads debate on social inclusion in House of Lords

On 26 October 2009, Baroness Prashar asked the government what steps they were to take to ensure that those affected by autism benefit from enhanced social inclusion and are properly protected by disability legislation.

An at times passionate and highly informed debate saw peers from all sides of the house raise critical issues including those relating to social inclusion, employment, housing and social support, discrimination, school exclusion, ageing, diagnosis health care, ageing, access to buildings, criminal. Justice and training of professionals .

We are encouraged by the call for an investment in research that reflects the current human and economic cost of autism and that the topics discussed are completely in line with the priorities of Research Autism.

We are most grateful to Baroness Prashar for raising these important issues in Parliament and look forward to a positive response from government to invest in research in this area.
