Introduction to Autism

This is the alt text

The term autism spectrum describes a range of neurodevelopmental conditions, usually present from early childhood and persisting through life, which are associated with difficulties in social functioning, communication and behaviour. Autism spectrum conditions also include Asperger Syndrome.

In the United Kingdom there are about 500,000 (or just under 1 in 100) on the autism spectrum. Without timely and informed help and support there can be potentially devastating consequences for the person concerned and those around them. These may include extreme anxiety and distress, injury, withdrawal and exclusion. In severe form the condition may require intensive, specialised, life long care and support.

Other individuals may not be severely affected, but due to the complex and uneven nature of their difficulties it is vital for them to have sensitive and appropriate help and support through school and at university, work and other key stages. Without such support they are vulnerable and likely to lead stressful, socially isolated and disadvantaged lives.

We believe wholeheartedly in the value of people with autistic conditions and the contribution they can make to the community. We also appreciate the real difficulties they face and their need for the right support. We seek to encourage and evaluate those approaches which will alleviate distress and promote independence leading to more fulfilling lives.
