Adult life for people with autism and Asperger syndrome – Achievements, challenges and needs

A collaborative study between the Institute of Psychiatry/Maudsley Hospital and Research Autism and the National Autistic Society

Project No. 021

This important new study is designed to explore outcome in adult life in higher ability people with autism/Asperger Syndrome

Around 15-20 years ago we conducted detailed interviews and assessments of young adults with autism and their parents, brothers and sisters. Many of these individuals are now in their 30’s, 40’s or beyond and we are anxious to meet with them again to find out more about the challenges and difficulties or successes they have experienced as adults. We are particularly interested in what help they and their families have had (or not!) from social, health, educational, and employment services in order to identify areas of unmet need.

Although we are currently trying to contact everyone who was involved at that time, obviously many people will have moved since we last saw them. If you or a member of your family think you may have taken part in the earlier research (either as someone with autism/Asperger syndrome, a parent or a bother/sister) and would like to find out more about this new study, please contact us by any of the means listed below.

We look forward to hearing from you

Yours,

Professor Patricia Howlin and Professor Sir Michael Rutter, P.O. Box 78, Institute of Psychiatry, London SE5 8AF
